If you want a powerful golf swing then you need to start looking at your golf grip first. And a lot of golfers suffer from a slice problem which costs them lot’s of distance. The main reason for this is because of the golf grip they use.
For a right handed golfer the left hand grip largely dictates whether the golf grip will help the golfer to have a powerful golf swing or not. Because if the left hand is not placed on the golf grip correctly then the right hand will not be correct either. That’s why in this blog post I’m going to help you grip the club with your left hand so you can hit more powerful golf shots.
To start with, when you’re practicing taking your golf grip you should have your feet together and the ball in the center of your stance. The reason you should do this is so that every day you practice the golf grip you can do it from the same position which can only help with golfing consistency.
Once you are setup with your feet together and the ball in the center of your stance then you’re ready to place your left hand on the grip. And I suggest you do this exercise with your 5-iron.
So when you place your left hand on the grip make sure the back of your left hand is pointing directly at your target and then place the grip so that it is running across the top joint of your forefinger and under the heel of your palm.
Once you have done this then crook your forefinger around the golf shaft.
To make sure you’re doing this right simply raise the club off the ground and maintain a firm and solid grip with just your forefinger and the pad of your left hand palm. Then, after achieving this, lower the club back to the ground and then wrap the last three fingers of your left hand around the golf grip.
I haven’t mentioned where to place your left thumb on the grip yet and that’s what you need to do next. When you do this you should position your left thumb just to the right side of the front of the golf grip. This will cause a V to be formed through the line between the thumb and your index finger.
Now when you look down on your completed left hand grip you should be very aware of how many knuckles you can see on your left hand grip. If you suffer with a slice problem or a lack power in your golf swing then you should move your left hand grip so you can see 3 to 4 knuckles on your left hand.
So that’s a summary of how you should position your left hand on the golf grip from longer, more powerful golf shots. What should you do with your right hand? Well, it should just go along for the ride and complement your left hand. The left hand is definitely the most important when it comes to gripping the golf club for power. So work on that first and when you get it right for you then you’ll notice a lot longer, more powerful golf shots.
